Accessibility Guide for Acorn Cottage Ashover
Welcome to Acorn Cottage
Acorn cottage is an old building set on two storeys, so unfortunately it is not fully wheelchair accessible.
Access to Acorn Cottage is from a level parking area up a small step over the threshold. The downstairs is all on one level, and includes a shower room with WC and washbasin. There is a small step into the shower.
This makes the cottage ideal those who are less mobile but happy to have an upstairs bedroom with access to a downstairs WC during the day.
Stairs – The two bedrooms and bathroom/WC are up a staircase with two short, relatively shallow flights of stairs with a small half landing and sturdy bannister.
The Garden Room downstairs can easily be converted into a downstairs en-suite bedroom with a single J-bed with direct access to the downstairs shower room. Just let us know when booking if you would prefer this option.
Registered assistance dogs are allowed in all parts of the cottage. As clutter is kept to a minimum, visually impaired and blind guests have commented that it is easy to navigate and they feel safe in the cottage.
Parking – We have space for 2 cars just outside Acorn Cottage, with a gravel surface.
Outside Area – From the parking area, a wooden gate leads into the level private lawned garden which is surrounded by hedges and walls for privacy. A single threshold step from the garden leads into the Garden Room. As an alternative, a single threshold step leads into the external stable door at the front. Security lights come on at night to light the car parking area and entrance.
Pets – Up to 2 well behaved dogs are welcome in the downstairs area. Registered assistance dogs are allowed in all parts of the cottage.
Public Transport – the closest railway stations are Chesterfield or Matlock and there is a connecting bus from Sheffield, Chesterfield and Matlock, stopping at Kelstedge, about half a mile from Acorn Cottage.
Nearest shops – We are well serviced by local Supermarkets – Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Tesco all deliver. Ashover Farm Shop has an excellent selection of local meat and seasonal fruit and vegetables. Also home grown produce is usually available to purchase from the farm and at the time of booking (sausages, bacon, eggs and honey – whatever is available!)
Mobility needs – If you or a member of your party has any specific mobility needs, please contact us before booking to check whether the accommodation is suitable for your needs.
Contact information – Contact Veronica or Jo to discuss your visit on 07762 596298 or email us: stay@acorncottageashover.co.uk for further information.
